The US embassy announced the launch of a programme for a tsunami warning system for Indian Ocean countries, on Tuesday. The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS) program is a two year, US$ 16.6 million project, that allows countries in the Indian Ocean region to detect and prepare for tsunamis and related coastal hazards.
The US program, in collaboration with other international organisations, will provide technical assistance to address all levels of early warning capabilities, said a US embassy statement.
This ranges from community-level disaster readiness to national and regional-level tsunami and earthquake detection and warning communications systems.
The US approach promotes a “multi-hazard” solution, covering not just tsunamis, but other serious coastal hazards like cyclones, sea swells, floods and earthquakes.
