partner BSNL’s international traffic through the island.
SLT however says growing traffic demand has meant that a high capacity undersea cable is needed in addition to the subcontinent connectivity offered from two SEA-ME-WE cables that connect Asia to Europe.
SLT and BSNL are currently looking for companies to lay the undersea cable.
The microwave link between Thalaimannar and Rameshwaram in India is mainly used to rout BSNL’s international traffic through Sri Lanka to other countries.
SLT uses its SEA-ME-WE cables to distribute this Indian traffic.
The fixed line operator’s management says the capacity increasing deal is in its final stages of negotiation.
