Sri Lanka apparel firm goes carbon neutral

Feb 10, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka Hirdaramani Group, a big apparel exporter, said it has got carbon neutral certification for one of its factories, giving it an edge over competitors among environmentally conscious consumers. Acquiring 'CarbonNeutral' certification for its 'Mihila' factory "adds to our competitive edge against regional providers, the group said in a statement.

The CarbonNeutral certification was the first step in an ongoing process to assess and reduce the carbon footprint of the group's factories, it said.

The Hirdaramani Group has 28 plants in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam and employs over 30,000 people spread across six countries and six industries.

The ˜Mihila’ factory in Agalawatte, south of the capital Colombo, got certified after a detailed greenhouse gas assessment from the Carbon Consulting Company, internal energy efficiency measures, and external carbon offsets to compensate for remaining emissions.
