Sri Lanka arrests suspects of mob violence in the island

May 15, 2019 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Police continued to arrest and
remand dozens of persons linked to communal attacks in several towns in the island, which erupted countrywide starting Monday night.

Issuing a statement the Police said they had arrested 14 suspects from Minuwangoda while another 60 persons have been arrested in the
Wayamba province. Ten arrests were made in Kuliyapitiya.

"The suspects could only get bail from a High Court," he said.


 

A Police curfew was imposed island-wide for a second day till 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. in Gampaha and North Central Province, as tensions continue.

The curfew resulted following anti_Muslim riots which were reported when shops and houses attacked in a number of areas including Bingiriya, Hettipola, Kuliyapitiya, Dummalasuriya, Kobeiganai, Nikawaratiya, and Panduwasnuwara.


In separate round up Police also arrested Mahason Balakaya leader Amith Weerasinghe and Anti-Corruption Force Operations Director Namal Kumara.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) on Monday blocked social media in a bid to stop the spread of false news, rumors and hate speech.
