Sri Lanka draws Chinese investors

Feb 17, 2010 (LBO) – A Chinese economic delegation from its Yunnan province is visiting Sri Lanka to study the economic and investment climate in Sri Lanka, the Board of Investment said. The island’s investment promotion agency said in a statement the 15-member delegation consists of senior Chinese economists and researchers.

The BOI statement quoted Yang Jie, Vice Director General, Economic Research Department of Yunnan Province, as saying Yunnan was trying to strengthen ties with South Asian countries.

The Yunnan economic delegation has agreed to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for investment.

In recent years China has emerged as one of the leading sources of investment in Sri Lanka among East Asian nations.

The BOI has hosted visits by delegations from regional Chinese business chambers from Shanghai, Eastern China and Fujian province.

Construction work has already begun on a BOI-promoted Special Economic Zone in Mirigama, north of Colombo, dedicated to Chinese enterprises.
