Sri Lanka former minister Anura Bandaranaike dies

Mar 16, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's former minister Anura Bandaranaike, a member of a powerful political family that has produced two prime ministers and a president, died Sunday at a private hospital, a senior ruling party official said. Anura Bandaranaike is the son of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) founder and former prime minister SWRD Bandaranaike and Sirimavo, who also became prime minister. His sister, Chandrika Kumaratunga, was a president for two terms.

Bandaranaike has been leader of the opposition and has held several ministerial positions in SLFP-led governments and has also crossed over to the opposition, when his sister Chandrika took over the party.

Last year he was sacked by President Mahinda Rajapakse along with Mangala Samaraweera and late Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi, but came back to the government as national heritage minister.

During the last budget debate he crossed over to opposition benches but did not vote against the budget.
