Sri Lanka fruit exports up 51 pct, vegetables up 25 pct in 2014: CCC

Sep 09, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s earnings from exports of fruits and vegetables during the year 2014 has increased compared to the previous year, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce said.

Referring to a study conducted by them, the chamber said earnings from fruit exports has seen the biggest jump, accounting for a 51 percent rise, while earnings from vegetable exports have gone up by 25 percent during the same period. Exports of fruits from Sri Lanka to countries such as UAE, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Maldives and Germany all have gone up during the year under review.

These countries are also the biggest buyers of the fruits produced in Sri Lanka, the study titled as ‘Fruit and Vegetable Sector Statistical Analysis 2014’ said.

Sri Lanka’s export earnings from vegetables have mainly come from markets such as, Maldives, UAE and UK, which are the biggest buyers of the Sri Lankan vegetables. The Ceylon Chamber’s latest study on the fruit and vegetable sector has analyzed the performance of both the local and the global fruit and vegetable sector during the year 2014.
