Sri Lanka Hemas to build hydro power plant in Africa

Nov 10, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Hemas Holdings plans to build a hydro power plant in an African country, making use of existing company expertise, as part of an overseas diversification, its chief executive Husein Esufally said. The group's Hemas Power subsidiary has two mini hydro plants operating right now with a third under construction in the island.

"We're looking at renewable energy projects outside Sri Lanka - hydro projects - mainly in Africa," chief executive Husein Esufally told LBO in an interview.

He declined to give details saying the deal is expected to be announced soon.

The size of the planned hydro power plant in Africa would be in the region of about 10 megawatts.

Hemas Holdings now has a total thermal power generating capacity of 100MW in its Heladhanavi plant, a joint venture in northwestern Puttalam, and two mini-hydro power plants with a total capacity of about 4.
