Sri Lanka launches Ceylon cinnamon brand to promote exports

Sep 03, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka has launched a brand for cinnamon, its main spice export, aiming to build an image like its main export, Ceylon tea, and exploit growing awareness of its health benefits. The 'Pure Ceylon cinnamon' brand will be registered in key markets in North America and Europe, said Janaka Ratnayake, chairman of the Export Development Board (EDB).

"Ceylon cinnamon has unique features like its colour, flavour and aroma. We're trying to brand pure Ceylon cinnamon all over the world," he told a news conference at the brand's official launch.

"This will be the second national brand after pure Ceylon tea."

The EDB owns the cinnamon trade mark, which consists of an image of cinnamon quills or sticks overlaid with a lion logo like that used in the Ceylon tea brand.

The cinnamon trade mark is to be registered in North American and European Union markets.

A marketing campaign will be done to promote the cinnamon brand starting with its launch at the 'Anuga' international food and beverage fair in Colonge, Germany in October 8-13, Ratnayake said.

The brand will also be promoted at an international trade fair and exhibition Sri Lanka plans to host in 2012.
