Sri Lanka leg of SAARC car rally winds its way through scenic beaches and cool hills

April 10, 2007 (LBO) – The Sri Lanka leg of the SAARC car rally was flagged off on Tuesday morning from Colombo where the rally would take a coastal road to reach Tissamaharama in down south.

The Rally will end in the Maldives on the 13th of April. On the second day, the Rally will continue to reach Kandy via Nuwara Eliya where it will travel to Dambulla, Anuradhapura and return to Colombo on the third and final day.

The 930 kilometre journey will run through Sri Lanka’s coastal belt, hills and historical cities giving exposure to the island’s diverse attractions.

The rally which was launched mid March this year in Bangladesh has already traveled through Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan and India.

The objective of the rally is to promote connectivity, people to people contact, trade, tourism and road transport in the region its promoters said.

The rally is funded through a public-private partnership with Sri Lanka Insurance and Ceylon Chamber of Commerce chipping in with the Government of Sri Lanka.
