Sri Lanka military says 13 rebels killed

Oct 30, 2007 (AFP) - Sri Lankan security forces killed 13 more Tamil Tiger rebels in fresh clashes across the north of the island, the defence ministry said Tuesday. Troops killed 10 rebels during an overnight attack along the military defence lines in the Jaffna peninsula, the ministry said in a statement.

It said one soldier was wounded in the attack while troops managed to destroy six rebel bunkers.

The ministry also said three rebels were killed in separate clashes across the north in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning.

There was no immediate comment from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, and no independent information on the claims.

Journalists have been prevented from travelling to the conflict areas of the island's north.

Tens of thousands have died since the Tamil Tigers launched a separatist campaign for minority Tamils from the majority Sinhalese community in 1972.
