Sri Lanka Navy arrests over 1,000 Australia bound migrants over three months

Aug 26, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Navy said it arrested 98 boat people in two multi-day fishing vessels who were bound for Australia, taking the total arrested or rescued to 1,076 in the past three months, according to data released so far. In July the Navy had rescued or intercepted 542 people including 08 who were attempting to reach Australia via India, statements by the military said.

In June 56 Sri Lankan nationals and 02 Indians were intercepted.

So far in August 478 boat people had been rescued or intercepted.

The Navy said on Aug 25, the fishing vessel 'Ann Mishal' carried 77 persons including 53 ethnic Tamils, 24 Sinhalese and while the second boat had 19 Tamils and 02 Muslims. The boats were intercepted off Chilaw in the Western Coast and Baticaloa in the East.

On August 21, the Navy intercepted the vessel 'Asha Duwa' with 69 persons (48 Tamils, 19 Sinhalese and 02 Muslims. The Navy said they were residents of Negombo, Pulmude, Vavuniya, Mannar, Jaffna, Wishvamadu and Batticaloa.

On August 20, the Navy said it intercepted vessels 'Kavindi' with 39 people (31 Tamils and 08 Sinhalese) and 'Prasansani' with 44 people (35 Tamils, 06 Sinhalese and 03 Muslims).
