Sri Lanka picks up Asian nominations in World Travel Awards

Oct 18, 2010 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s has been nominated under few regional categories for Asia region in the World Travel Awards, but lost to countries like India, Singapore, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia which swept the boards.

Sri Lanka is recovering from 30 years of war and the country has been named the top destination for 2010 by US based New York Times and the second best by the National Geographic Magazine.

Regional awards were given under 47 categories, for leading, resorts, hotels, business hotels, travel firms, honeymoon destinations, airlines, hotel brands, and niche sectors.

India won the Asia’s leading destination but Sri Lanka was among eight nominees. Asia’s leading tourist board was ‘Incredible India’ but Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau was among eight nominees.

Asia’s leading inward tourism development company 2010 was Turkey based Aydeniz group. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority was among four nominees.

From Sri Lanka’s private sector Ayurveda Pavillions picked up two nominations.

For Asia’s leading resort, which was won by India Ayurveda Pavillions was among 19 nominees. Another four Indian firms were nominated in the category.
