Kumana national park in the south of the country borders the Yala national park and is renowned for migratory waterfowl. The migratory season runs from about August to April.
"The migrant birds and the local water birds can be seen in Kumana," Sri Lanka's director General of the wild life conservation, Ananda Wijesooriya told LBO.
A 30-year conflict with Tamil Tiger separatists in ended in May 2009. During the war various parks had been closed and opened with several attacks by Tamil Tiger separatists including land mines and destruction of game lodges.
Security clearance to open the parks were given last August, but the wildlife conservation department had to re-build roads and the information centre.
