Sri Lanka receive Japanese grant to revive livelihoods in Vavuniya

Aug 20, 2012 (LBO) – The Japanese government handed over a 11.7 million rupee ($90,000) grant to a community development organization to revive agro-based livelihoods in the conflict affected Vavuniya district, in the north of the island. People™s Livelihood Development Foundation (PLDF) Monday received the 11.7 million rupee grant under Japan™s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP)

The project will benefit 625 resettled families in Vavuniya, the Japanese embassy releasing statement said

Under the project the Elamarandakulam and Poomaduwa tanks south of Vavuniya will be renovated to expand paddy cultivation and home gardening.

The project will also help improve the provision of agricultural tools, plants and seeds and food processing techniques for villagers of Rankethgama, Thaddankulama, Palle-uruwa and Awarankulam.

The project will also encourage and educate the community to grow crops in their home gardens and food processing training will facilitate a path for better livelihood, Priyantha Kumara, Director of the People™s Livelihood Development Foundation said in the statement.

The project will also generate new employment opportunities in the four villages.
