Sri Lanka ruling alliance secures two-thirds majority in Parliamentary Elections

Aug 07, 2020 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's ruling alliance has secured a two-thirds majority in the parliamentary elections 2020.

In a twitter message, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he hopes to form a parliament to empower the "Vision of Prosperity" policy statement he put forward in the last Presidential Election and it is his belief that it can be achieved tomorrow.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has secured 145 out of the total 225 seats including the 29 national list seats in the Sri Lankan Parliament according to the results released by the Election Commission.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has obtained the second-highest number of votes in the poll with 54 parliamentary seats.

Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB) led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake secured three seats while Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has secured 10 seats.

The United National Party has secured only one seat. The Ahila Ilankai Thamil Congress (AITC) obtained two seats and EPDP secured two seats.

Our Power of People Party (OPPP), Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Muslim National Alliance (MNA), Thamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani (TMTK), All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC), National Congress (NC), and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) obtained one seat each in the next Parliament.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has summoned the new Parliament to meet on 20 August 2020 following the General Election.
