Oct 25, 2010 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s tea production fell slightly in September 2010 compared with a year ago although output for the nine months were much higher than in the same period for 2009, the Tea Board said. Tea production in September fell five percent to 26.4 million kilos from the previous year, mainly owing to falls in output from the low grown and high grown regions, the latest Tea Board statistics showed.

Brokers Asia Siyaka Commodities said tea production in August was 25.1 million kilos and that September’s output had been expected to be higher as more fertilizer was distributed to small holders and tea prices were attractive.
“Continual rain has however had negative effect,” they said.
High grown tea production during September was down 11 percent from the previous year and the lowest since 2007, the brokers said.
Output of low growns was also lower than that of 2009 September when production was recovering from drought.
Tea production for the nine months to September 2010 was up 18.4 percent 247.3 million kilos from the previous year.
