Sri Lanka tea export volumes down in April, revenue up

May 25, 2017 (LBO) - Sri Lankan’s tea exports fell to 20.1 million kilos in April 2017, a nine percent dip from a year ago, but revenue was up, Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said. "Tea Exports for the month of April 2017 totaled 20.1M/kgs vis-à-vis 22.1M/kgs of April 2016 thus showing a decrease of 2.0M/kgs," the company said in a report. "All main categories i.e Tea bags, Packeted and Bulk teas have shown a decrease compared to the corresponding month of 2016." However the report says when analyzing the total revenue realized of 16.5 billion rupees for April 2017 vis-à-vis 13.

On a Cumulative basis Medium and Low Gowns have shown a growth whilst High Growns show a marginal decrease when compared to the corresponding period of 2016. When analyzing the April CTC production of 2.2M/kgs records a fairly significant gain of 0.4M/kgs vis-à-vis 1.8M/kgs of April 2016.Medium Growns have remained static whilst High and Low Growns have shown a growth YOY. It is also noteworthy that Low Grown CTC production of 1.3M/kgs is the highest ever recorded for a calendar month. On a cumulative basis too January-April CTC production totalled 6.7M/kgs showing a gain of 0.5M/kgs vis-à-vis 6.2M/kgs of January-April 2016. It is also relevant to note that the total FOB value recorded for April 2017 of Rs. 822.83 too shows a significant gain of Rs. 218.06 vis-à-vis Rs.604.77 of April 2016 . On a cumulative basis too, January – April 2017 total exports of 88.5M/kgs shows a decrease of 8.1M/kgs vis-à-vis 96.6M/kgs of January – April 2016.

Here again, tea bags, packeted and bulk teas have shown a decrease compared to January – April 2016. However, total value realized for the period January – April of Rs. 69.2B shows a gain of Rs. 10.8B vis-à-vis Rs. 58.4B of January – April 2016. Consequently January – April 2017 FOB value too of Rs. 781.91 have recorded a gain of Rs. 176.67 vis-à-vis Rs. 605.24 of January – April 2016. Meanwhile U.A.E. which occupied the fifth position has shows a fairly significant drop in imports vis-à-vis January – April 2016. Similarly, Syria too has recorded a decrease in imports in 2017.
