A ship carrying a 40,000 tonnes of coal from Indonesia has started discharging its cargo using barges, a reporter said.
At full capacity the plant will burn 114 tonnes of coal an hour. Coal firing of the furnace is expected to begin next month.
The power will be carried from Norochcholai along a 117 kilometer high tension transmission line to be connected to the national grid at Veyangoda when the plant is formally commissioned in January 2011.
The first stage is financed with a 455 million dollars Chinese Exim Bank credit, and a 5.3 billion Sri Lankan rupee component. The second stage will be financed with an 891 million Exim bank credit and 11 billion Sri Lankan rupee component.
The plant is built by CMEC, a Chinese contractor.
