Sep 09, 2016 (LBO) - Sri Lanka’s Ports and Shipping Ministry said in order to improve the regular costal transportation services in Jaffna, measures have been taken to develop the jetties in surrounding island's with the aid of the Navy. “The jetties are not properly maintained in every island,” a ministry statement said.

"Piers and a slipway will be built to cater to passenger ferry transport as new infrastructure is needed to develop regular coastal transportation services enabling people to travel between seven inhabited islands and the peninsula." The total number of islands in Jaffna is 11, out of that only seven islands are inhabited. They are Karikattuwan, Nagadeepa, Delft, Analathivu, Eluvativu, Kayts and Karainagar. The Ministry hopes to develop the jetties using the Navy’s labour force and professional expertise. Northern Naval Commander Rear Admiral Priyantha De Silva said that under this project the Eluvativu and Analathivu islands are expected to develop the piers. "Under the project new piers will first be built in the Eluvativu and Analathivu islands, with the former already under construction," De Silva said.
