May 02, 2011 (LBO) – Sri Lanka will call proposals to set up businesses in a ‘port city’ to be built around a 2,000 hectare area near Trincomalee harhour in the north eastern coast, information minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said. The cabinet of ministers had given the nod to set up a negotiation committee and a project committee take the plan forward.
The 2,000 acre land is owned by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Rambukwelle said.
Rambukwelle said there could be free trade zone type industrial zone but if the land has potential for tourism especially near beach areas, proposals could also be made.
A 30-year war in Sri Lanka’s north east ended in 2009.
The ports authority is evaluating proposals for industries around the Hambantota port in the Southern coast.
