Sri Lanka to develop Trincomalee port city with ADB finance

Feb 08, 2013 (LBO) – Sri Lanka will improve infrastructure in the northeastern port city of Trincomalee with an 85 million US dollar loan from the Asian Development Bank, information minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said. The Integrated Urban Development Project for Trincomalee will improve city infrastructure and encourage private sector investment, he said.

The cabinet of ministers had given approval for the ministry of defence and urban development to conduct a feasibility study and submit a report.

The ADB has agreed to fund the project with an 85 million US dollar credit, the state information office said.

Sri Lanka is planning to attract port related investments into Trincomalee. A highway is also planned for the city, as part of the island’s northern transport project.
