LED-BULBS

May 19, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's Power Ministry plans to distribute one million LED bulbs among consumers under a national loan programme coming under its demand side energy management. LED lamps will be provided through a concessionary loan scheme to reduce the rising electricity demand, where consumers recover the amount in interest-free 24 monthly installments charged with the electricity bill.

Under the plan, two LED bulbs will be given to households consuming 1-30 electricity units per month, three bulbs for houses using 30-60 units per month and four LED bulbs for houses using 60-90 units per month. Power Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said the bulbs will be provided following the request of the consumers and consumers can pay the price of the bulbs from the saved electricity units during 2 years. After that consumers will be able to save power as well as money as these bulbs have a five year warranty from the provider, Siyambalapitiya said. He further said 3.8 million people in Sri Lanka still use incandescent bulbs and it consumes 70 percent more electricity than LED bulbs.
