Sri Lanka to take action against Marvan after second test

Nov 13, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lanka would take action against batsman Marvan Atapattu after the second test with Australia, a top official said. Sri Lanka Cricket interim chief Jayantha Dharmadasa told LBO that the decision was taken Monday.

Atapattu was quoted by the media as saying that Sri Lanka's cricket selectors were a "set of muppets headed by a joker."

The 36-year-old opening batsman had blamed the selectors for the team's current woes. He had been speaking out against selectors after the March-April World Cup where he did not play a single match despite being in the squad.

"Sri Lanka cricket at this moment of time is not going in the direction it should be going, especially with a set of muppets headed by a joker," Atapattu was quoted as saying on the cricinfo website.

He was not selected in the original squad for the Australian tour, but was brought in as the 17th member on the intervention of sports minister, Gamini Lokuge.

Dharmadasa said that if Marvan was recalled midway through the tour, the issue would balloon into a bigger international sporting controvery.
