Sri Lankan air cargo goes electronic

May 20, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's national carrier SriLankan Airlines has introduced electronic cargo booking and scanning facilities at the main international airport in Katunayake. Its cargo arm, SriLankan Cargo, is modernising its cargo centre at the international airport north of Colombo to improve operational efficiency and strengthening Colombo’s position as an air cargo hub in the region, a statement said.

Among the recent enhancements have been hand held bar code scanners to upload information on any cargo item, and the empowering of freight forwarders to complete bookings on the Internet through electronic airway bills, it said.

A closed circuit TV system is to be introduced to enhance security at the cargo centre.

"The bar code scanners capture information from the bar coded labels attached to any piece of cargo and instantly upload directly into the SkyChain system which is accessible throughout SriLankan Cargo’s global network," the statement said.

"This considerably speeds up the process which had earlier been done manually."
