Oct 15, 2007 (AFP) – Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels attacked a military position inside Sri Lanka’s main wildlife sanctuary as the authorities were preparing to reopen it for tourists, officials said. At least one soldier was wounded in the Monday evening attack inside the Yala National Park in the deep south of the island, officials said, adding that at least one vehicle had been damaged by gun fire.
There were no reports of casualties among those involved in the assault on the military detachment at Thalgasmankada, an area where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are known to have carried out attacks in the past.
Officials said there were no foreign or local tourists inside Yala at the time.
The authorities were planning to reopen the park shortly.
