Sri Lanka’s business chamber urges political parties to support delayed 19th amendment

Apr 22, 2015 (LBO) - Sri Lanka should take advantage of the multi-party government to strengthen constitutional governance in the country and pave the way to improve the business climate in the country to attract greater investment, both local and foreign, a statement said. “Considering the importance of the constitutional reforms that have been proposed Sri Lanka should take advantage of the opportunity presented by a multi-party government to strengthen constitutional governance in the country and set aside narrow political considerations,” the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce said in a statement. “Ceylon Chamber of Commerce welcomes the recent constitutional reforms process initiated under the leadership of the President & the Government and also welcomes the proposed 19th Amendment to the Constitution,” “Particularly those provisions pertaining to; repealing of the 18th Amendment, the constitutional council & the independent commissions, repealing of urgent bills and right to information.” The Chamber says that these provisions will help strengthen good governance, law and order, independence of the judiciary and media freedom. “All of which are essential elements of a genuine democracy and a society that is committed to equal opportunities for all its citizens,” “The Chamber believes that these provisions will improve the business climate in the country and pave the way for greater investment, both local and foreign thereby creating a platform for sustainable growth, greater job opportunities & a higher standard of living for all Sri Lankans.”
 Chamber also asked the government to call an general election soon as possible a week ago.
"The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce urges the President and Government to call a general election at the earliest possible opportunity preferably keeping to the dates announced in the “100 day program”." Sri Lanka’s 19th amendment to the constitution which was to be presented in parliament yesterday (Tuesday) was postponed to 27th and 28th April, 2015. This was due a situation that irrupted in the chamber with opposition parliamentarians staging a protest against a move to summon former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the bribery commission.
