Sri Lanka’s capital cools to a 2-year low

Jan 13, 2011 (LBO) - A combination of a cloudy sky and a cold stream from Himalayas pushed temperature at Sri Lanka's capital Colombo to a two year low of 18.

8 degrees on the Celsius scale on Thursday, the meteorological office said.

"The average temperature for Colombo in the past 30 years has been 22.3 degrees celcius while the month of January is usually known to be a bit chilly," Nayana Hendhivitharana, duty officer the Met department said.

Sri Lanka has also been experiencing heavy rains and floods which has killed 18 left a million people homeless.

Colombo last experienced 18.8 percent temperature on February 13, 2009 meteorologist Ajith Wijemanne said.

On February 03, 1987 Colombo has had a temperature of 18.

3 degrees, January 24, 1984 a temperature of 18.3, January 04, 1983 a temperature of 16.

4, February 03, 1987 a temperature of 18.
