Aug 18, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lankans should calmly accept the final outcome of the election and demonstrate respect towards democratic ideals, the top business chamber said, praising its conduct as free and fair.
“We sincerely hope that the winners as well as losers will accept the final outcome of this election, in a peaceful manner, without disturbing the normalcy and day to day life of the people, demonstrating our respect towards democratic ideals,” the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce said in a statement.
“We believe that the elections were conducted in a free and fair manner, allowing the people to peacefully exercise their franchise,”
The Chamber also extends its warmest congratulations to the United National Front for Good Governance on it victory at the polls and also retirated that the new government must work to restore rule of law and ethnic harmony.
“The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce extends its warmest congratulations to the United National Front for Good Governance, the coalition led by the United National Party, for their decisive victory at the just concluded General Elections for the 8th Parliament.”
“As we have been reiterating in the past, the country is faced with many a challenges; such as ensuring harmony and national integration, strengthening democratic institutions and rule of law and governance and adopting inclusive development strategies,”
“We believe that being elected to govern the nation, the most critical responsibility of the new government is to work together with all the concerned stakeholders and develop prudent strategies and plans to overcome the critical challenges that the nation is faced with.”
