Sri Lanka’s LankaCom launches IPTV platform for hotels

Dec 15, 2012 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s LankaCom and Singapore’s SingTel has launched an IPTV based entertainment platform for hotels that gives customized entertainment and two way interaction with guests to offer and sell other services, officials said. Wizner said each room is provided with a small wireless set-top box that can connect the guest’s mobile device or tablet PC to the IPTV platform. The guest can then watch his own videos on the hotel TV he said.

The device has become popular and is also sold in a consumer version for people to fix in homes.

Another feature that has proved surprisingly popular is the inclusion of internet based radio which is customized to the guest’s profile.

A Russian guest for example will see icons representing his home radio or TV channels where he can catch up with news if he wants.

Udalagama said his company has been providing wi-fi and internet services on a fee based model for more than 10 years with 24 hour support for hotels. Lanka Communication Services, a joint venture with Singapore Telecom already provides wi-fi internet services for many top hotels in the country chief executive Rohith Udalagama said.
