June 01, 2011 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s police chief has resigned over the shooting of protestors who opposed plans to build a pension fund by deducting more money from private sector workers who are already contributing to two state managed funds. A government statement said Inspector General Mahinda Balasuriya has decided to “tender his retirement” over police action.
In Sri Lanka it is almost unheard of for top officials to step down over the actions of their juniors.
Two police officers have also been arrested over the shootings.
Sri Lanka’s main export zone was closed and dozens of workers and police were hospitalized in clashes in protests over the proposed pension law.
At least one worker is reported to be critical and on life support.
