July 01, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lankan freight forwarders should use their expertise in international trade to modernise the island's archaic, inefficient domestic trade, a transport expert said. Amal Kumarage, chairman of the National Transport Commission, said inefficiencies in internal trade were a huge cost to the economy as well as individuals and a drag on economic growth.

The transport commission was now drafting a land transport policy that includes freight transport, so the industry was assured of government support.

Improving efficiencies in internal transport and logistics could yield significant economic benefits, he said in a speech at the annual general meeting of the Sri Lanka Freight Forwarders’ Association (SLAFFA).

"SLAFFA should not only be concerned with international trade but look also at domestic trade," said Kumarage, who is also professor of civil engineering, department of transport and logistics at the Moratuwa University.

There is a "large amount of waste and inefficiency" in domestic trade, he said Monday.
