Sri Lanka Telecom said Tuesday that it is joining 16 global telecom carriers to build a new US$ 500 mn submarine cable network.
The submarine cable will span 20,000 km (12,400 miles), connecting 14 countries and will boost high-tech communications between South East Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

rnLabelled SEA-ME-WE 4, the network will carry telephone, Internet and broadband data streams using ultra fast technology. The cable will be ready by the third quarter of next year.rn

rnThe 14 countries to be connected are Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and France.rn

rnAlcaTel Submarine Networks and Fujitsu will implement the project.rn

rnSLT is believed to have pumped in US$ 30 mn for its share in the project, though its spokesman Mohan Ratnayake declined to comment.rn
