US official visits Sri Lanka on de-mining

May 02, 2012 (LBO) – A senior United States official in charge of security assistance programs and policy had visited Sri Lanka and for talks with defence officials and to see the progress on de-mining, the US embassy in Colombo said. He had also visited Kilinochchi and Vavuniya, where a 30-year civil war ended in 2009. The US is giving 5 million dollars for de-mining this year up from 2.5 million dollars last year. Since 1993, the US has provided 34.5 million US dollars to Sri Lanka.

Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) of State for Plans, Programs and Operations Walter D Givhan had ended a visit on May 02, after meeting Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and commanders of the army and navy.
