Aug 15, 2014 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers had approved a plan to haul solid waste from Sri Lanka's capital Colombo to sanitary land in the northwest of the island by rail as part of a plan to produce power, a top official said.









Waste will be taken in special locomotives and rolling stocks.

The Railway Department has already completed the designed work of transportation system.

Solid waste disposal in Colombo region is about 1200 metric tons per day and Colombo along collects 700 metric tons, information minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said.

Disposing of solid waste in Colombo has become a problem city authorities running out of landfill sites.

The estimated cost for the project is about 107 million US dollars.

The plan being consider is to take rubbish to Aruakkalu, Puttalam, more than 130 kilometres north of Colombo where the government construct a sanitary land according to the international standards, could be filled.
