May 14, 2008 (LBO) – The Sri Lanka unit of India's Tata Communications is looking to expand in to new areas after getting 30 percent of the outgoing voice traffic of the country, officials said. . "We are looking for new licenses to expand into areas demanded by our customers," Tata Communications group chief N Srinath said.

At the moment the company only has an external gateway operator (EGO) license which allows it to be in the international wholesale voice and data and enterprise retail markets.

The company now carries more than 75 million voice minutes a year out of Sri Lanka which is about 30 percent of the total volumes of the island, Tata Communications Lank chief Ravi Sankar said.

It carried 45 million incoming minutes. Sankar says the firm's business volumes doubled last year.

The firm, earlier known as VSNL Lanka, was re-named as part of a global strategy to re-brand Tata Communications global operations. Licensed in 2003, it began operations in February 2004.

A former state-owned international communications service of India, Tata Communications has now become a global operator with a submarine cable network spanning the globe.
