Cellular operator Hutch (formally known as Hutchison) is linking up its limited mobility network to add an island wide mobile service to its portfolio. Hutch adopted a network model which restricted the use of its service within geographical cells, to offer customers a basic voice service at lower tariff rates.

The model helped Hutch penetrate the rural markets, and slowly spread its network across the island.

Now, Hutch Chief Executive Thirukumar Nadarasa says the company is linking up its home-zones cells to offer a free-roaming mobile service.

“The physical connections are already there, its now a mater of programming the network to allow mobility between the cells.

”

Already 30 percent of the network has been linked up and includes the Kurunegala and Kandy areas.

The Southern belt is next on the cards with the firm hoping to complete the programme by end September.
