The World Bank says it will give US$ 250mn to tsunami affected countries to meet urgent rehabilitation work for the next six months. “This amount will cover the next six months while further financing for longer-term reconstruction needs is identified,” said a press release from the World Bank on Thursday.

Countries that have requested immediate assistance include Indonesia, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

“The US0 million can be made available quickly from existing programs, and will include the provision of emergency credits and grants to respond to the immediate needs in the countries hit by this disaster,” said the press release.

The World Bank is in direct contact with affected governments and other international agencies like the UN to ensure a coordinated approach.
