Road accidents in Sri Lanka have been increasing each year, faster than the growth in population or even the economy but slower than the growth in its vehicle fleet.
There are over a 1000 accidents each week with about five to six people killed every day, most of them in the productive age group of 14 to 59 years.
But though most accidents occur in the heavily motorised Colombo city, the highest and most severe fatality rates are actually in the North Western province and the Southern province.
