Aug 24, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved appointing former Media Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Marker as the chairman of the proposed National Information Center for a period of two years.
The centre will provide official information of the government to electronic and print media, coordinate information and act as the government’s official media spokesperson.
The center will be established under a Patron Council comprising the President, Prime Minister and Media Minister.
The government has allocated 75 million rupees for maintaining the center as a separate project under the Prime Minister’s office for the period of 01st July to 31st December 2016.
Provision of complete, reliable and accurate official information to public is a key responsibility of the government and it has also been reaffirmed by the recently adopted Right to Information Act, the statement on cabinet decisions said.
