May 24, 2016 (LBO) - The South-west monsoon condition is gradually establishing over the country, and showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, North-Western, Southern, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces, the Met Dept said on Tuesday. "Fairly heavy to heavy falls (around 75-100mm) are also likely at some places," a statement released at 5.30 am for May 24th, said. Showers or thunder showers will occur at several places in the Uva provinceand in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts. Strong windy conditions over the country and in the sea areas around the island will continue further particularly over the Southern, Eastern and Northern sea areas. Several areas in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, Kegalle and Kalutara also pose landslide risk, the Disaster Management Center said. It will be several days before flood waters recede, UN OCHA said on Sunday, raising concerns about health issues in urban areas after Sri Lanka experienced the worst floods in 25 years.
