Mar 19, 2012 (LBO) – Colombo Dockyard said it was eyeing yacht repair as a new market after winning work from a French specialist yacht management company, given Sri Lanka’s proximity to the Maldives where many vessels end their cruises.

The yard, majority owned by Japan’s Onomichi Dockyard Co.

, said it completed repairs on schedule on super luxury yacht Lauren L within 40 days with the drydocking call work package covering repairs in all sectors including propeller tail shaft withdrawal.

Titan Fleet Management, a specialist yacht management company, selected the yard for the 10-year class survey repairs on the seven star category 90-metre long yacht after a site visit by its fleet manager.

“The Colombo shipyard was the best option for the owners/ managers given the full service facilities available in Colombo, coupled with the yacht’s last operating area in the Maldives,” the yard said in a statement.

“High net-worth luxury yacht repair sector prospects look promising, with many of the yacht operators terminating their cruises close to Maldives in the Indian Ocean, reverting to repair- maintenance soon after a charter,” it said.
