‘s UN Ambassador, speculation she will challenge him for the Presidency

October 9, 2018 (LBO) – United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has resigned according to media reports.  Haley (46) is a high profile American political leader of Indian descent.

Haley was the Governor of southern state South Carolina before she resigned to take up the position of US Ambassador to the UN.  The high profile position is considered ‘Cabinet Rank’ in terms of protocol.

Trump’s appointment of Haley to the UN was seen by many as a move to neutralise a potential contender for the Presidency during Trumps re-election campaign in 2020.

Haley was seriously considered for Trump’s Vice President, which eventually went to Michael Pence. Her name was also mentioned as a potential Secretary of State after the resignation of former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson from the post. The position eventually went to Mike Pompeo.

With mid-term Congressional elections in the United States less than a month away, political commentators are speculating that Haley’s resignation is coming at an appropriate time to set her up for a presidential run. About six months after the mid terms (18 months before the election) is usually when candidates in the United States declare their intention to contest the Presidency.

Answering the speculation, Haley has said she is not running in 2020, and that she will campaign for Trump in the election.

“It has been the honour of a lifetime” to be UN Ambassador she has said.
