Sri Lanka issued a tsunami warning to residents around the coast of the island as an earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale hit the west cost of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The Meteorology Dept. said the quake hit Indonesia at 2210 Sri Lankan time on Monday, though there are still little signs of tsunami striking for the second time.

"It’s an early warning. We are not exactly certain it will hit Sri Lanka, but we have put people on alert, to watch out for possible signs within the next three hours," Met Dept’s Deputy Director Lalith Chandrapala told LBO.

“Those living near the coast around the island are advised to be vigilant and go to a safer place. The relevant authorities are advised to take appropriate action,” he said.

Nearly 31,000 people died and millions were made homeless in Sri Lanka when the December 26 tsunami stuck Indonesia.
