Sri Lanka spinner Mendis joins squad in Bangladesh

DHAKA, December 29, 2008 (AFP) - Spin sensation Ajantha Mendis joined the touring Sri Lanka squad here Monday after recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out of the first Test against Bangladesh.

"My ankle is alright now and I am not feeling any pain," he told reporters on arrival.

Mendis picked up the injury earlier this month while bowling for his local club, leading to his replacement by Rangana Herath in the squad for the two-Test series.

Sri Lanka appear all set to win the opening Test -- which resumes on Tuesday after a rest day for the national elections -- having gained a massive overall lead of 406 runs.

The tourists will be boosted by the presence of Mendis, who played a key role in his team's 2-1 victory over India at home in August when, in his debut three-Test series, he took 26 wickets with clever variations.

The 23-year-old army officer is also poised to become the fastest bowler to reach 50 one-day wickets, having already grabbed 48 in 18 matches.

India's Ajit Agarkar currently holds the record, achieving the feat in 23 one-day internationals.

The second Test begins in Chittagong on January 3.

The Sri Lankans will also play a triangula
