Maldive Island hopper jumps to India

January 07, 2008 (LBO) - The Republic Island of Maldives will resume international flights with state-run Island Aviation Services due to fly to the Indian city of Trivandrum later this month, officials said.

Island Aviation Services (IAS), a domestic carrier, will operate daily schedule flights from January 25, using a turboprop DeHavilland Cananda 'Dash8' aircraft between Male' and Trivandrum, the company said, Monday.

The Maldivian Civil Aviation Department Director General, Mahmood Razee Monday formally handed over the later of approval to IAS Director, Bandhu Ibrahim Saleem at a ceremony at the Nasandhura Palace Hotel in the capital of Male.

"The choice of jet or turboprop for sector lengths of about 500 kilometers is fundamentally driven by economics," Razee told reporters.

"IAS by choosing to commence services with a turboprop airliner has also addressed some of the other elements of the business for this level of stage lengths," Razee said.

The IAS currently has five aircraft and Saleem said their current fleet includes a 50-seater to operate the Trivandrum run.
