The explosion occured near the railway station at Mount Lavinia, a sea-side resort, police said.

The explosion came as police remained on alert for possible bomb attacks by Tamil Tiger rebels who are fighting government forces in the north of the island. Tiger rebels have been blamed for a string of bomb attacks against public transport in recent months.
