Sri Lanka's opposition United National Party has pledged support to the government and expressed confidence that the country can emerge from the disaster by remaining resolute and moving forward with the support of the international community.

"I have had several discussions with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and pledged our support," Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

"I have instructed all local bodies under United National Party control to co-ordinate with the government and continue relief activities.

"

Mr. Wickremesinghe was addressing the media after touring disaster struck areas in Southern Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Rajapakse had been co-ordinating relief measure while President Chandrika Kumaratunga was out of the country.

The Opposition Leader says the immediate need was for medical relief, food and shelter and to clear roads and establish communications so that relief could start to flow.

"But these people are suffering from trauma," Wickremesinghe said.

"I met mo
