Though the threat of a major tidal waves is receding, Sri Lankan officials are advising people on the coast to be vigilant. The Sumatra/Andaman Island area is still active, with the last quake being reported in the early hours of Tuesday, though the magnitude of the waves have fallen to around 5-6 on the Richter scale.

Tuesday’s quake, measuring 5.

8 on the Richter Scale, took place at 2.10 a.m. this morning, off the Southern tip of Sumatra.

But according to P M Jayathilaka Banda of the Meteorology Department, this latest quake is not likely to cause more tidal waves to batter Sri Lanka.
