Apr 18, 2013 (LBO) - Commercial Bank of Ceylon, Sri Lanka's largest private lender by assets said its 562 automated teller machine network had dispensed 1.79 billion rupees on April 10, the highest ever for a single day. In Sri Lanka cash withdrawals from banks peak in April, during a traditional New Year festival period.

Commercial Bank said its ATM's had dispensed 10.6 billion rupees from April 01 to 10, higher than last year's 9.2 billion rupees.

The single day record on April 10, had exceeded last year by 136 million rupees involving 325,000 transactions up from 306,000 a year earlier.

The bank said an average of 225 transactions had taken place every minute on April 10.

The Commercial Bank ATM network clearly plays an invaluable role in the day to day lives of millions of people," said Jegan Durairatnam, the Bank’s executive director and chief operating officer said in a statement.

"While this is often taken for granted, the true value, capacity, robustness and reliability of the network is proven beyond a doubt during peak shopping seasons such as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year and Christmas."

In the month of December 2012, Commercial Bank had dispensed 25.3 billion rupees.
